History of Medjugorje
Medjugorje is a small village located in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Until the early 1980s, it was a quiet rural community known mainly for farming and the traditional way of life.
In June 1981, Medjugorje gained international attention when six local children reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary, whom they called the “Gospa” (Our Lady). These events quickly drew pilgrims from across the former Yugoslavia and beyond, even during a time of political tension in the region.
Throughout the following decades, Medjugorje developed into one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Europe. Despite ongoing discussion within the Catholic Church regarding the official status of the apparitions, millions of visitors continue to come each year seeking prayer, peace, and spiritual renewal.
Today, Medjugorje is known worldwide as a place of faith, reflection, and religious tourism, blending its humble origins with its role as a global spiritual destination.
In 1981, it is thought that Our Lady appeared to a group of children. Because of these apparitions, this small village parish has transformed into a destination for pilgrims from all over the world.
The town of Medjugorje is one of the largest prayer centres in the world. Numerous witnesses claim to have discovered faith and peace in this place.
